How to add your name and date to a PDF in Chrome

Add separate text entries to the right spaces on a PDF, with a check for field labels, date format and the file you will send.

To add your printed name and a date to a PDF in Chrome, open the file in Sign PDF, use its text tool to place each entry beside the correct label, and download the edited copy. Reopen that copy before sending it. Adding new text is different from replacing wording already printed in the document.

Read the field labels first

Find every place the document requests a name or date. Check whether the name field asks for a full name, initials, or a printed name beside a separate signature line. Do not assume that typing your name completes a signature requirement; follow the recipient's instructions for that field.

For a date, copy the format the form requests. A label such as MM/DD/YYYY gives you a different order from DD/MM/YYYY. If no format is specified and ambiguity matters, check with the recipient before completing it. Do not use today's date automatically when the label asks for an appointment date or another event.

For example, suppose a two-page form has a name line on the first page and a date beside an acknowledgment on the second. Treat them as separate entries and check the wording next to each. This is an illustrative document layout, not a test of a particular form.

Choose the text workflow

If your Chrome PDF viewer already has the text controls you need, you can use them. Google's current PDF help describes adding text and downloading With your changes. Reopen the saved file whichever tool you choose.

Sign PDF provides another workflow for adding text and visible signatures to local PDFs. Its Chrome Web Store description documents text placement, page navigation, zoom, undo and download. It does not establish that the extension creates interactive form fields or replaces existing PDF text.

A form that already has interactive fields may let you type directly into those fields in a suitable viewer. Placing new text on blank space is a different operation. Foxit's explanation of PDF text tools distinguishes adding text, editing existing content and entering values in interactive fields.

Add the name and date in Sign PDF

Install the extension from its Chrome Web Store page if needed, then follow its documented local-file workflow:

  1. Open Sign PDF from Chrome's toolbar. Drop in the PDF or choose Select Files.
  2. Navigate to the page containing the name field and zoom in enough to read its label.
  3. Use the text tool to add the requested name. Place it inside the blank space without covering the label or surrounding instructions.
  4. Add the date as a separate text entry in the requested format. Navigate to another page if its date field is elsewhere.
  5. Review the entries at normal reading size. If a recent placement is wrong, use Undo and add it again.
  6. Choose Download to save the edited PDF.

The listing says local files are processed on your computer and the installed extension works offline. That describes the local-file workflow; opening a PDF from a web link still requires access to that link.

Check every requested entry

Move through the relevant pages before downloading. Check the whole form, including pages you visited earlier:

  • Check that the name matches what the field requests and sits on the correct line.
  • Check that the date refers to the requested event and uses the required format.
  • Make sure neither entry covers printed text or another field.
  • Review each page that asks for an entry, including repeated requests.

Keep the original PDF so you can start again if necessary. After downloading, open the saved copy, locate the entries and read them at normal size. Check the filename before attaching it so you do not send the blank original by mistake.

If you need to correct the document's printed wording, use a tool that explicitly supports editing existing content. Adding another text entry over the old words is not a dependable way to remove them.

If the form also requests a visible signature, see the separate guides to drawing a signature or adding a signature image. Sign PDF describes those as electronic marks, not certificate-based digital signatures. Follow a recipient's specified signing process when one is required.
